Provincetown

Thanks to my unparalleled technological savvy, my witty, insightful, eloquent, informative, and much anticipated blog entry from yesterday about Provincetown got launched into cyberspace never to be seen or found again. So I will give it another try.
To say that we are enjoying Provincetown would be an understatement. This town known as Ptown is quite charming. On our drive from Boston we both resisted the temptation to pay homage to Patti Page, so we only sang "If you're fond of sand dunes.........you're sure to fall in love with Old Cape Cod" once. Provincetown is located at the very tip of the Cape. If you can picture an arm flexing its muscles, Provincetown is the fist. It has quite a history. The Pilgrims of Mayflower fame landed here first, but found the land so inhospitable due to wind, sand, and lack of water that they took the short cruise to Plymouth where they settled. In the 1800's the main industry was whaling, which was subsequently supplanted by fishing. In the early 20th century, Provincetown became a magnet for artists, and after World War II people found it a very desirable vacation destination. Today it draws thousands of tourists, especially in July and August when the population may be increased by as much 70,000 to 100,000 people during the season. This is a very popular destination for the LGBT community and rainbow flags are flown at some of the merchant locations. The town is divided between east and west, with the east end of Commerce St. (the main street) housing art galleries and the west end housing shops and restaurants. Thanks to recommendations from our friend Gerard, we have had two delicious dinners while here at The Front Room and Mews restaurants. The only chain business we have seen is Ben And Jerry. Everything else looks pretty mom and pop.
When we arrived on Sunday, we were among thousands of tourists enjoying the fine warm weather. We had a nice lunch at a restaurant that allowed us to do lots of people watching. Yesterday started with fine weather, but as the day progressed, the wind came up and there were a few drops of rain. I went on a whale watching cruise while Dianne opted to explore the town and people watch. The whale watching was very successful and rewarding as we got up close and personal with about six different humpbacks. It was fairly windy and we did some rocking and rolling in the swells, but nothing scary. I actually got some good photos of whales with the occasional misfires of peoples' elbows, wrists, heads, hair, and even one butt in the mix. I have gone through one round of deleting photos and will go through round two later.
Today we have massages at the Spa here at our hotel and may take the guided Provincetown Trolley tour later, weather allowing. There is some rain in today's forecast but it is supposed to be brief and light.  Until next time, farewell.
